Soundalikes Litigation - An Update
When do musical similarities - some inevitable, others resulting from deliberate copying - amount to copyright infringement? The latest answer to this question arrived in March 2018, when the Ninth Circuit affirmed the jury verdict against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke for infringing the copyright in Marvin Gaye’s "Got to Give It Up" with their song "Blurred Lines." Professor Jenkins will review this and other cases attempting to define the line between creativity and theft, and the intriguing legal doctrines (some intuitive, some bizarre) that they have developed in the process.

What if there were low-cost, quick and easy steps you could take to not only improve your career but yourself and your relationships as well? What if you could use these steps anywhere at any time?

In this workshop, using a tool called the Wellness Inventory, you’ll learn how to combine and use techniques, like twelve notes on a scale, in twelve different areas of well-being to create a better life on and off the road. For example, using your breath, you’ll learn a five-minute way to relax and recharge whether out on the road or at home with friends and family. You’ll learn ways to eat healthier without counting calories or having to change your diet.  Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to access resources to continue your journey to well-being throughout the year.  By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with techniques to have a better life on and off the road.

Issues with 3D Printing
This presentation will analyze the ways in which three-dimensional (3D) printing technology (also known as additive manufacturing) challenges presumptions in intellectual property law. 3D printing technology democratizes design, distribution, and manufacturing to the extent that even moderately skilled individuals can design, disseminate, and manufacture items. Knowingly or not, such 3D manufacturers interact with intellectual property law as they go about creating, tweaking, and sharing digital designs, and an individual can be guilty of infringement regardless of whether there is an intent to infringe, or even knowledge of the intellectual property right involved.

Music Licensing in the New Streaming Era
The music distribution economy is transitioning from one of ownership to one of access with the dramatic shift from fans purchasing physical products and digital downloads to fans streaming interactive content. Streaming platforms have dramatically increased but streaming revenues have have not replaced the lost income from physical products. With this transformation, the music licensing system has become even more complex for artists to navigate. Songwriters and publishers have sued or settled with some interactive streaming services. Questions have arisen about the role of PRO's and “fractional” vs. “full-work” licensing.  This session will address this new world of music licensing.

Maintaining a Band Through the Years
Persistence in the face of change is one of the keys to the success of any band or artist. Bands may face a departure within the lineup, making a change to the team, life changes among band members, slow periods, or sudden success. Planning and flexibility are crucial to keeping a band going, ensuring that you can keep moving toward your goals. In this session three veteran performers will share how they have handled those inevitable “real life” events, and kept their own bands active and growing over the years.

Audio Recording Techniques for Acoustic Musicians
High quality acoustic recording can be achieved in many different ways, including traditional studio methods and more innovative, hi-tech solutions, like multi-track recording microphone arrays. During this seminar we explore different techniques for audio recording, and we discuss topics such as, types of recording microphones and their usage, different recording techniques, necessary equipment, acoustics of rehearsal spaces, and innovative technologies. By discussing various options and tools, we want to help bluegrass artists learn to capture their passion and creativity, to catch the moment of chemistry between musicians and record a great sounding demo.

How to Leverage Streaming
Last year, 38% of the recording industry’s revenue came from streaming services. With CD sales in decline, streaming is now essential – and not just a promotional tool. It holds unique opportunities for fan engagement, revenue growth, and brand building. But does bluegrass belong in the growing streaming world? Are you ready for it? Here we’ll discuss questions about streaming: Can you make money? Is there a market for bluegrass? Can streaming get more people to your shows? How can streaming elevate your digital presence to build your fan base? If fans are streaming, what do you sell at the merch table?

Presenting top-notch artists while strengthening ties with their community is part of it.
